Sergeant Duff served in the 42nd Regiment or Royal Highland Regiment, also known as the Black Watch. He enlisted in August 1806, at the age of 14. He served with the regiment in many battles of the Peninsular Wars, and was wounded at Waterloo.

The engraving is dated the year after the Battle of Waterloo.

John Kay was born near Edinburgh in 1742. A keen artist from childhood, he was a barber until 1785 when he became a full-time engraver and painter of miniatures. His portraits of Edinburgh characters are vivid and unmistakable.
