This is the obverse of a gold medal honouring George, Lord Seton, Master of the Household to Mary, Queen of Scots. It was made by Martin Gilbert, an Edinburgh goldsmith.
The obverse has the interlocked initials of George Seton and his wife, Isabella. The Latin inscription reads: 'No-one can serve two masters'.
In 1563, Gilbert was called before the Lords of Secret Council and required to deliver the punches for the medal to the Warden of the Mint. The Lords probably feared that the medals resembled coins too closely.
