This is the obverse of a bronze medal designed by the Scottish artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the volunteer movement in 1881. Paton had commanded a battery of the 1st Edinburgh City Artillery Volunteers in 1860. The dies for the medal were engraved by Neil Macphail.
The obverse shows a crowned bust of Queen Victoria between the letters VR (for 'Victoria Regina' or Queen Victoria). The inscription reads 'XXI ANNIVERSARY OF THE VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT. MDCCCLXXXI'.
The artillery battery was formed mainly of artists and included the painter John Faed as its first lieutenant.
