Pan
Add to album

This bronze pan, also known as a patera, was found at Whitehill at Westruther in Berwickshire. It was a valuable Roman object, imported from Gaul to one of the Roman forts sometime between 100 and 200 AD.

The pan is missing some pieces, but is basically well-preserved. It is ornamented below the rim.

Roman pans were expensive cooking wares. Some were made in Roman Britain, but others were clearly imported from Gaul. The highly decorated examples were probably not for utilitarian use, but instead probably had a religious purpose.
