Tea Towel, embroidered by Mrs Catherine Craig Kidd at Kuching POW camp, Borneo

This linen tea towel was embroidered by Mrs Catherine Craig Kidd when she was imprisoned at Kuching POW camp in Borneo between 1942 and 1945. The tea towel contains the names of fellow internees at the camp.

Mrs Kidd got all the other women prisoners to sign their names with indelible pencil. She then took any bits of wool, cotton thread etc she could find and embroidered the names.

There may have been a few names still to be done when Mrs Kidd was released. She completed the embroidery in India where she and her husband were sent to recuperate after their ordeal.
