From North Hill Of Shapinsay, Orkney
This ceramic pot was found at North Hill of Shapinsay in Orkney. It had probably been used to hold cremated remains, sometime between 1850 and 1200 BC.
The urn has been reconstructed from fragments. Its upper part is missing.
Inhabitants of the Northern Isles developed their own distinctive funerary customs from around 1850 BC. They adopted the practice of cremation, popular in mainland Scotland, but used distinctively local containers.
