From Bruthach An Sithean, South Uist, Outer Hebrides
This enamelled bronze brooch was found at Bruthach an Sithean on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. It was a valuable Roman brooch, probably passed from one native chief to another, ending up miles from the Roman frontier.
The central setting of the fantail brooch also originally held enamel, but it is now missing.
Powerful local chieftains controlled contact with the Romans, keeping most of the Roman objects and passing some onto their followers.
