Made in Edinburgh
This silver teapot was made by Edinburgh silversmiths G. & M. Crichton, in 1862-3.
The spherical teapot with pedestal base is decorated all over with panels containing leaf scrolls. There is a Sphinx-like figure on the handle of the teapot.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, owning a silver teapot indicated status, wealth and taste. Tea was initially very expensive and in the 18th century teapots were small. In the 19th century tea became cheaper, more was drunk and teapots became larger.
