possibly made in Edinburgh
This caned chair combines barley-twist carving characteristic of the 1680s with asymmetrical scrolls characteristic of the 1690s. If made in London, it would date from about 1690. If made in Edinburgh, it may have been made somewhat later.
A heavy layer of varnish prevents identification of the timber which is probably walnut, oak or beech. There are various minor alterations and a rear stretcher has been lost.
