probably made in eastern Scotland
This chair is inscribed '1660' and, although this inscription may be a later addition, the chair is characteristic of the 17th-century Scottish east coast. It was acquired in Buchan.
The lower front legs and the stretchers are replacements and a thick layer of varnish has been applied.
Features which indicate an east coast origin include the curving arms, a pair of back panels and elements of the carving.
