Bowl
Add to album

This ceramic bowl was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It is of high quality samian ware, imported between 140 and 180 AD.

The bowl has decorated panels illustrating animals and the fertility god Pan. It has been partly restored.

Some Roman officers brought their own fine tablewares to Scotland or purchased imported pieces. Samian ware, mass-produced in Gaul, was particularly valued, sometimes repaired if damaged or reused to manufacture other items.
