Seal impression (cast)

This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the obverse of the Cokete Seal of Dunfermline, dating from around 1312. A Cokete Seal was used by customs officials based in burghs.

The seal depicts St Margaret holding a sceptre and book flanked by two shields, one bearing the Royal Arms and the other the arms of Dunfermline. The legend '+ S'COKETE REGALITATIS.DE. DVNFERMELYNN' translates as 'Cokete Seal of the regality of Dunfermline'. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.

Margaret, descended from Anglo-Saxon kings of England, married King Malcolm III of Scotland in 1070. She became noted for her learning and piety. Margaret founded Dunfermline Abbey in 1072. Later, in 1250, she was canonised.
