Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is one is a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates evening dresses. Dated 20 February, 1849, the plate is signed, 'Barreau'.
The waistline of these dresses is tight fitting and extends to a long point. Stiffened petticoats of crinoline (horsehair) would have helped to swell the dome-shaped skirts.
Other artists who contributed to Le Petit Courrier de Dames were E Préval, A de Taverne, Laure Noël and Hervy. These artists all drew for a series of magazines which had their editorial offices at No 1 Boulevard des Italiens, Paris.
