Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Belle Assembleé, a ladies' monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates a lady's fancy dress outfit and is dated 1 August, 1819.
The text at the foot of the plate reads, ' Danish fancy dress worn at the Prince Regent's Fete, Invented by Mrs Bell, 52 St James's Street'.
George IV was entrusted with the Regency in 1811, when his father, George III took ill. He remained Prince Regent until his father's death in 1820. He had considerable influence on masculine dress and it was said he took more interest in his tailors than in his ministers.
