Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is one of a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates menswear. Engraved by Damours, it is dated 31 July, 1834.
The men are dressed in frock coats and trousers. The coats are fitted at the waist and have high collars with rolled-back lapels. The neck-cloth completely covers the neck and was the ancestor of the modern neck-tie.
Le Petit Courrier des Dames (1822-65) included one or two fashion plates with each weekly issue. The plates are not usually signed but the styles of the better known artists are easily recognisable and identified.
