This seal matrix of the Bishop of Galloway, John Paterson, dates from the 17th century. It was made of copper.
The Latin inscription on the pointed oval matrix translates as 'The seal of John Paterson, Bishop of Whithorn. For the King and the people.' The matrix fits onto a turned wooden handle with a central knob.
John Paterson (1632-1708) was a staunch Jacobite supporter of episcopacy. After the revolution of 1689 he was banished to England, later being allowed to return to Edinburgh.
