Medal, showing Death as a Scottish PiperThis cast iron uniface German propaganda medal shows the figure of Death as a Scottish Piper. It was cast in 1915, probably after the battle of Loos in which Scottish regiments inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. It was designed by the German medallist Arnold Zadikow. The medal is cast, rather than struck, giving one side of decoration only. German soldiers developed their own view of Highland soldiers and were said by British propagandists to have nicknamed their kilted enemy 'the ladies from hell'. This back-handed compliment was rather appreciated in Scotland, although no evidence exists that it was anything but British propaganda.
