Seal matrix of St Magnus CathedralThis is the brass seal matrix of St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall in Orkney. It dates from the 14th century. The matrix depicts a figure holding a sword, with two kneeling, praying figures on either side. Seals are evidence of the paperwork involved in running a complex organisation. They were signs of the medieval Church's huge authority, combining the functions of signature and logo to show that documents were genuine.
