Sailors of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Forth Division, at Rosyth

At the right of the Division is 16 year old Seaman James Archibald MacReady who was drowned at Scapa Flow on 10 October 1939, three days before a German U-boat attack sank the H.M.S. Royal Oak, killing 833 men.

The lands of Rosyth with what remained of Rosyth Castle were acquired by the Government in 1903, for the purpose of constructing a Naval base and dockyard which is still in existence today.
