Dish ring

A dish ring holds a plate or dish in place. This silver example was made around 1770 by Hugh Ross, a silversmith based in Tain in Ross-Shire.

Craftsmen in the smaller centres such as Tain tended to concentrate on more workaday items like spoons, forks and rings, probably reflecting the comparative wealth of their clients.
