Drug jar

This maiolica drug jar was made at Castel Durante or Deruta in Italy in the mid 16th century.

The jar painted in colours with armorial trophies encircled by a laurel and acorn wreath. The central band is inscribed 'IERA PIGRA' = HIERA PICRA (from the Greek for sacred and bitter), a purgative electuary.
