Miss A. Lindsay was awarded this decoration in recognition of her work with the Scottish Women's Hospitals in Serbia. These were the inspiration of Elsie Inglis, an Edinburgh doctor, and were accepted by Serbia after the British had turned the women's offer down.
The Scottish Women's Hospitals sent over a thousand women to the Front, as doctors, nurses, orderlies and drivers. Run exclusively by women, the Hospitals were set up to further the war effort by aiding the sick and injured, and also to show what women could achieve in the field of medicine.
