This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1814, the plate illustrates menswear from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.
The French title of the plate translates as, 'Frock coat with horizontal pockets'. The plate is signed 'H' in the bottom left hand corner and 'B' in the bottom right.
Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany. Many were short lived but Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one of the survivors and ran from 1797 to 1839.
