RecordPlate (2 of 2)made at Urbino, Italy
Plate (2 of 2)This maiolica plate was made in the late 16th century at Urbino in Italy. It is from an accouchement set which consisted of five to seven bowls and plates with a cup and possibly a salt cellar that fitted together, one piece on top of the other. They were given as gifts to mothers after confinements and regarded as commemorative presents which were also practical. This photograph shows the underside. The underside plate is painted in polychrome with grotesques and foliage. The interior of the plate also has grotesques and foliage, with Cupid in the centre.
