made in Italy
This maiolica dish was made in 1533 in Italy, perhaps at Gubbio by a follower of Francesco Urbini. This photograph shows the underside.
The underside has floriated scrolls in lustre and an inscription giving a description of subject on the interior of the plate - 'The Judgment of Solomon' - and the date. The inscription reads 'istoria de le mer / etice che se cho / ndusaro / innate a Sala / mone 1533' [The story of the whores who took themselves before Solomon 1533].
Francesco Urbini was working in Gubbio between around 1531 and 1536. He was influenced by one of the most prolific painters of the 1530s, Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo.
