made at Castelli, Italy
This maiolica drug jar was made at Castelli in Italy in the early 18th century.
The jar is painted in polychrome with a saint, probably St Benedict, holding a staff and book and with a raven. It is inscribed 'EL MATRICINO', an electuary, the principle ingredient of which is underwood, which is mixed with honey or something similar.
