This clear glass goblet was was designed and engraved by Laurence Whistler in 1962. It was made by James Powell and Sons of Whitefriars in London.
The goblet is stipple-engraved with a church tower in a landscape. It is inscribed 'Dawn of Emblems' and is signed 'L W 1962'.
In the 1960s, British glass manufacturers were slow to follow the lead of their more innovative Scandinavian contemporaries. British artists experimented little with actual glassmaking, but continued the long national tradition of engraved decoration.
