Aeroplane engine

This aero engine was built in 1911 by Automobiles Louis Renault of Billancourt in France. It is one of the earliest examples of a Vee configuration for the pistons in an aero engine. This type of engine would have powered an Astra type 'C' biplane and a Doutre two-seat pusher biplane.

The eight-cylinder 50-horsepower air-cooled petrol engine has a nameplate marked 'Renault Constructeur BILLANCOURT (Seine) Moteur No.30009'. The cylinders are arranged in two banks of four, set at a 90 degree angle in a 'V' configuration.

Production of the Renault Vee 8 in Britain was undertaken by the Royal Aircraft factory at Farnborough in Hampshire and by the Wolseley Aviation Company.
