Aeroplane engine

This exhibition aero engine - an early pre-production version of the Conway turbo fan engine - was made in 1955 by Rolls Royce Ltd.

The engine has two axial compressors and two turbines. The nameplate is marked 'ROLLS-ROYCE LTD DERBY & LONDON ENGLAND CONWAY SERIAL GT94'.

As with this engine, Rolls Royce generally named their post-war engines after British rivers. The Conway was the first bypass gas turbine engine to go into production, entering service in April 1960 as the power plant for some Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 airliners. It was later developed to power the Vickers VC10 and Super VC10 airliners.
