This stoneware salt crock, also known as a 'saut bucket' was made around 1850 at the Caledonian Pottery in Glasgow. It is decorated with statuettes of 'Tam O'Shanter' and 'Souter Johnny', characters from Robert Burns's poem 'Tam O'Shanter'. A souter was a shoemaker or cobbler.

The decoration also includes women reading a teacup, vine leaves, fruit and masks.
