Aeroplane engine & model of Bleriot aeroplaneThis display at the Museum of Flight at East Fortune in East Lothian features a French-designed Anzani military-type aero-engine and a model of a Bleriot aeroplane (XI). The Bleriot plane was the first to cross the English Channel, flown by Frenchman, Louis Bleriot in 1909. The engine dates from 1910 and was fitted to a Bleriot aeroplane. The air-cooled petrol engine engine has three cylinders arranged in a 'Broad arrow' or 'Fan' pattern. It is complete with carburettor but lacks a magneto. The nameplate has the markings 'Anzani S.C.D.G. & 1026'. The model Bleriot is built to a scale of one-and-a-half inches to one foot. On July 25 1909 Louis Bleriot became the first person to fly across the English Channel in an aeroplane, his Bleriot XI. The XI was a monoplane design which was rare at the time, most aircraft constructors preferring the biplane layout. Bleriot monoplanes were used in the early years of World War I as gun platforms.
