Vases

This matched pair of porcelain vases were made at the pottery of William Littler at West Pans in East Lothian. They date from around 1770.

Each inverted pear-shaped vase has a single fluted handle, two cartouche panels and moulded flowers. The vases are decorated with mazzerine or 'Littler's' blue.

Littler arrived in Scotland in the early 1760s after the failure of his Longton Hall factory in Staffordshire. The founder of Scotland's porcelain industry, Littler was keen to seek the custom of the landed gentry. Consequently his factory made high quality, if uneconomical, wares. It closed in 1777.
