from Westness, Rousay, Orkney and probably Largo, Fife
Add to albumThe silver finger ring on the left was found at Westness on Rousay in Orkney. The fragment of a bracelet on the right was probably found at Largo in Fife. Both are objects used by Scandinavians in the British Isles, and date from the 9th or 10th century.
The finger ring is made of a narrow band of silver stamped with opposed triangular stamps. It is a simplified version of stamped Viking Age silver bracelets, and similar examples are known in gold.
The bracelet fragment is the central part of a typical bracelet type, often called an Hiberno-Viking arm-ring. They are common in Ireland, and found in Viking Age silver hoards in Great Britain and Scandinavia.
