Sword, spearheads, shield boss and ring

This sword, the spearheads, shield boss, and small ring, all made from iron, were found in a grave of two native auxiliary soldiers at the site of the Roman fort at Camelon in Stirlingshire. The burial dates from between 80 and 90 AD.

Fragments of a wooden scabbard and textiles are preserved in the corrosion on the sword. The spearheads also preserve fragments of the wooden hafts. The small ring has folded-over ends.

The occupying Roman army, with its mixture of soldiers from various parts of the Empire, brought foreign burial traditions. Cremation was normal, the remains usually buried in pots. Local recruited auxiliaries generally stuck to their traditional practices.
