Fender, coal shovel & coal scuttle
These items for a fireside date from the 19th century. They are made of sheet metal. The fender (right) and the coal shovel (foreground) come from Cairness House at Longmay in Aberdeenshire.
The elegant fender, made to go in front of a coal fire, is bow-fronted, the front formed with mesh arranged in neoclassical style. The coal scuttle has four lion paw feet on the base and a lion's mask with a drop ring handle on each short side, while the lid has a cast knop handle. The coal shovel has a turned black wooden handle and incorporates a hood to contain small bits of coal and dust.
