made in Edinburgh

Postcard of Measures.
© National Museums Scotland

These two pewter baluster measures, one for a half gill (left), the other for a pint, were made in the early 19th century by Robert Whyte, a prolific pewterer based in Edinburgh's Cowgate. Whyte became a freeman of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Edinburgh in 1805.

The half gill measure has a ball thumb-piece, the pint measure an 'embryo shell' thumb-piece. There are excise marks for Edinburgh and Perth on the half-gill, while the pint has marks for Edinburgh and Fife. Both measures are inscribed with the maker's name.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
