made in Glasgow
This detail shows various marks of the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company Ltd. One mark is transfer-printed, another is a Bell's impressed mark. They are on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate, the design for which was registered in 1887.
There were many variations in Bell's marks. The green transfer-printed mark here consists of a circular belt with a bell in the centre. On the belt are the initials 'J & M.P.B & Co. Ld.' Above the belt is a scroll with the pattern name 'BURUNG KUPU'. Below is another scroll with the place name 'GLASGOW'.
The registered design number, 87394 (for 1887) is at the foot of the transfer-printed mark. The impressed marks are a bell with a capital 'B' and a heart.
