This shows the inscription on the front of a glazed earthenware mug which dates from around 1840. The inscription reads 'Peter Burns Swinton'.

Peter Burns Swinton (1827-1912) was born in Gifford in East Lothian. He undertook legal training and became factor of Yester Estate in Gifford.
