Map (2 of 2), of Central Scotland

This is one of two sheets of a railway map of Central Scotland was made in 1907, at the height of railway extension in Scotland. This sheet shows Edinburgh and the east.

The map dates from after the building of the Forth Bridge and the main line up to Perth. It also shows the Weymss private mining railway. The scale is 2 miles to 1 inch.

The earliest railways carried coal. From the 1840s there was a boom in construction for general freight and passenger use and by the early 20th century most of the populated parts of Scotland could be reached by railway.
