made in Glasgow
The detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware ashet which dates from between 1842 and 1880.
There were many variations in Bell's marks. This one consists of a decorated bracelet with the pattern name 'BRACELET' in the centre. Underneath the bracelet are the company's initials 'J. & M.P.B. & Co.'
Like many other potteries in the second half of the 19th century, Bell's most popular ware was transfer-printed earthenware, which was durable, decorative and affordable by the masses. Some designs were extremely well produced.
