Jug (detail)This detail shows the mark of Glasgow potters, Robert Cochran. It is on the base of a transfer-printed and coloured earthenware jug dating from the second half of the 19th century. The mark consists of a figure of Britannia, standing next to a lion, with a sailing ship in the background. The pattern name 'ROSE & LILY' is above Britannia, while the company name 'COCHRAN/GLASGOW' is below. The Clyde basin, like the Forth was a natural location for the pottery industry, with a ready supply of coal, a growing market and good transport links.
