Jug (detail)This detail shows the mark of Robert Cochran of Glasgow. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware jug, dating from the second half of the 19th century. The mark consists of a seated figure of Britannia with the company name 'COCHRAN GLASGOW' above and the pattern name 'CHINA' below. Robert Cochran took over the Verreville pottery at Finnieston on the Clyde in 1847 as Robert Cochran & Company. He went on to establish the Britannia pottery (also in Glasgow) as a modern works in 1857, primarily to meet the Canadian export trade.
