Trade token (reverse), Penny, of Inveraray Castle, Argyll
This is the reverse of a copper penny trade token of Inveraray Castle in Argyll. The token is dated 1797.
The reverse has the initials 'TG' entwined above two crossed palm branches. The surrounding text reads 'BRITISH PENNY/1797'.
Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued to ease the shortage of small change. The contemporary fascination with tokens resulted in them becoming collectors' items. Some tokens were issued purely for collecting.
