This is the obverse of a bronze medal commemorating Sir Walter Scott. Dating from 1822, the medal was made by W. Bain and B.R. Faulkner.

Influential throughout Europe and America, Scott is known as the father of the historical novel. Born in Edinburgh in 1771, he trained as a lawyer but was drawn to writing. His first major publication was 'The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border' in 1802-3.
