The seal illustrated here is a personal seal. Bearing the name of its owner on the face, it symbolises a person's identity and can be used as a signature.

Four Chinese characters in the seal script are arranged in two vertical lines on the face of this seal. They should be read from above to below and from right to left.

Personal seals were used to stamp books, paintings and calligraphies to show ownership and connoisseurship. Artists also incorporated their seals in their completed works.
