from Newstead, Roxburghshire
This shallow samian ware bowl was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was imported from Roman Gaul sometime between 80 and 180 AD. This picture shows the inside of the bowl.
The shallow bowl is broken, but enough survives to give an impression of its shape. At the bottom of the inside of the bowl is a manufacturer's stamp.
Some Roman officers brought their own fine tablewares to Scotland or purchased imported pieces. Samian ware, made in Gaul, was particularly valued, sometimes repaired if damaged or reused to manufacture other items.
