Barometer (detail)
Add to album

This is a detail of a special barometer using coloured oil and hydrogen rather than mercury. It was also known as a sympiesometer and dates from around 1825. It was probably made by Alexander Adie, a scientific instrument maker based in Edinburgh.

The detail shows the base of sympiesometer. The silvered brass face is inscribed 'PATENT/ A. ADIE/Edinburgh/ No 579/Spencer Browning/ & Rust/ AGENTS/ London'.

Dealings between the firms of Adie of Edinburgh and Spencer, Browning & Rust of London at this date appear to have been mutual, with each acting as a specialist supplier of items to the other.
