This is sheet 5 from the twelve sheets which make up the 'Map of Scotland', a folding map published by John Stockdale of Piccadilly in London. Mounted on linen, the map is dated 31 January 1806 and is to a scale of 3.5 miles to 1 inch.
This sheet covers much of the Highlands of Scotland including most of Ross-shire, and Inverness-shire. It also shows the Caledonian Canal which links Inverness to Corpach, near Fort William.
Thomas Telford began building the Caledonian Canal in 1803. It took nearly 20 years to complete and had a complex system of locks, making use of Loch Ness, Loch Oich and Loch Lochy.
