The 'Kingdome of Scotland'This is a detail from a map of the 'Kingdome of Scotland', included in John Speed's 1652 atlas of the British Isles, 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain'. The atlas was first printed in London in 1610. These drawings, in the right margin of the map, show a 'Scotch' woman and a Highland woman. Typical of 16th and 17th century political attitudes, the drawings are designed to contrast 'civilised' Scotland with the 'backward' Highlands. In the margins of earlier editions of the 'Theatre', there were portraits of James VI, his wife Anne and sons Henry and Charles. These royal portraits were replaced in 1652 by the 'Scotch' and Highland figures. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
