Letter & tartan sample, associated with William Wilson & Sons, Bannockburn, near StirlingThis letter, addressed to William Wilson & Sons of Bannockburn near Stirling, is an order for supplying lengths of tartan as per the attached sample. The letter dates from between the late 18th and mid 19th century. The pencil inscription above the letter reads, 'Murray'. In 1782, the ban on wearing tartan was lifted. It had been introduced in 1746 after the Jacobite rising. Less than half a century later it was popular and fashionable and became one of the most successful products of the Scottish textile industry.
